HOI Steps Its Game Up!

In 1988 a young preacher named David Davis arrived at Decatur First United Methodist Church (DFUMC) as the new Associate Pastor of Evangelism and Mission. He had a passion for spreading the Truth, and a heart for Central America. Originally from Buffalo, NY and armed with a degree from the Candler School of Theology,  David quickly embraced the vision of his mentor Dr. Jim Thompson to help support the launch of HOI as a mission partnership in Honduras.  DFUMC initiated its first trip to Honduras in 1990 and there’s been no looking back!

Ever since that time David has had a passion for missions all over the world, especially the people of Central America. A year hasn’t passed without him visiting one of these countries.

David earned his doctorate from Princeton, while planting and serving the Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church from start up to present day with over 3000 members.  Although gifted in the pulpit, and deeply in relationship with the church’s dynamic membership, the call of missions never abated.  David also developed a particular enjoyment and satisfaction in the development aspects of his ministry, that is, raising money.

It’s this confluence of David’s gifts and mission calling that has led him to enthusiastically join HOI as Director of Development. Although we know the transition from Senior Pastor of a large and vibrant church to a new career will be challenging, he is convinced God is calling him to serve in the mission field where his passions are so heightened.

In his new role at HOI David, along with his team members Caitlin McCormick and Louis Deas, will be responsible for all HOI fund raising  and communications. This includes the HOI Golf Tournament in support of Graham Stovall; the Pathway Scholarship program; annual fundraising Roast event (this year honoring retired Mayor of Decatur Bill Floyd); year end campaign; and a new multi-year campaign. David is focused on solidifying the long term sustainability of the HOI ministry throughout Latin America and I’m positive you will be hearing from him!

The HOI board, Laurie and I are excited to welcome David and his wife Rachael, to the team and know you will embrace him in his new role. We continue to be amazed and humbled at the talent God has brought to our staff in the US, Honduras, and Nicaragua. We’re busy working on the next 25 years!
